Arbor Knot

The arbor knot is so simple a caveman could... I'd better stop there! Anyway, it's very simple and gives a good opportunity to show it's place in the whole fly fishing rig. It is also called the reel knot and is the way to attach regular fishing line too.Wrap the line around the reel. Make an overhand knot and then another at the very end of the line. Pull the standing end and cinch the second knot down. Start reeling up the line keeping tension on the feeder spool so the line lays down properly. UUUGH!

After the arbor knot, a nail knot holds the standing end of the fly line to the backing. At the other end of the fly line, yes another nail knot on another piece of backing. On the end of that backing is a loop knot to attach your leader/tippet. A loop knot is tied in the standing end of your tippet and secured to the backing with a double loop knot. If you are making your tippet with descending sizes of monofilament, blood knots will hold each together. The blood knot is a pain in the butt so you would be better off to buy a tapered leader. Besides if you warp the line, or use only one piece of line for your tippet, your line does not fall straight and your fly will land to one side or the other. They actually make a heat shrink tippet that eliminates the nail knot for your leader backing. We don't want to take ALL the fun out of it though!
